Majesty of the Spiritual
Parts I, II & III
With classical music ascendant in Europe, half a globe away, forcibly subject to enslavement throughout the two continents, a crushing voicelessness and namelessness descended upon the experience and histories of millions Americans of African descent. Direct from the artistic imagination, carried on an ascendant note, a profound call can not be repressed, and rises out of the centuries of an unbreakable system, the human heart beating against a belief system history records savagely brutalizing lives, bodies, fortunes, spirits, hopes, futures and aspirations of all in its wake.
Spirituals have alternately served as guideposts on the pathway to virtue and godliness; blueprints to redemption; the clarion vision of the attainment of a spiritual and material freedom. Gradually, they have come to shape our contemporary experience in ways both very deeply embedded and commonplace.
The concert hall Spiritual emanates in a direct line from this history as a tradition of hope born out of the unimaginable suffering of enslaved generations of Americans. On the stages of the US and Europe, performances forged of this centuries-long demand and deep appeal for emancipation are transformed, and widely received by audiences as a seminal declaration of hope for humanity.
Throughout an astonishing evening, an unparalleled colloquy of artists gathered in San Francisco and reached to these heights – to this very same call of ages – what creator Robert Sims termed as that centuries-long plea of a people in trouble. A magnificent musical creation, unified in a brilliant tour de force, this unforgettable concert embodies a genre fully fixed at the heart of the American idiom. In a major American presentation, this musical source unmistakably cements its place at the core the classical music canon.
Majesty of the Spiritual is a tribute to the indomitable spirit of a people and a legacy that has shaped the expression of classical music for all time.
