For today’s Noontime Concerts™ recital at Old St. Mary’s Cathedral (“San Francisco’s Musical Lunch Break”), violinist Mariya Borozina chose to perform two concertos one by Johann Sebastian Bach (BWV 1041 in A minor) and the other by Joseph Haydn (Hoboken VIIa/4 in G major). Her ripieno ensemble consisted solely of a string quartet (violinists Wenyi Shih and Dawn Harms, violist Joy Fellows, and cellist Eric Sung). The result was a pleasantly intimate listening experience, reminding all of us on audience side that you did not need that many instruments to constitute an ensemble in the eighteenth century for either of these composers…
