Examiner review of pianist Daniel del Pino / violinist Livia Sohn / cellist Robert Howard — 2011 March 15

The performers at today’s Noontime Concerts™ recital at Old St. Mary’s Cathedral (“San Francisco’s Musical Lunch Break”) were pianist Daniel del Pino, violinist Livia Sohn, and cellist Robert Howard. It is unclear whether they play regularly as a piano trio or were brought together by circumstance to prepare a performance of Felix Mendelssohn’s Opus 49 trio in D minor (his first); but their execution made for a truly informative perspective on the composer. Furthermore, it was an excellently timed event, coming right after the all-Mendelssohn program that Kurt Masur prepared for his visit to the podium of the San Francisco Symphony and next week’s performance of the Opus 20 string octet in E-flat major by the ensemble of the New Century Chamber Orchestra.
